Is it better to look good or feel good? Dr. Robin says there is value in taking care of appearances, but more often than not, too much emphasis is put on looks. "The world that we live in—television, print, radio, the neighbors, what people are talking about at dinner parties around the table—it's so externally referenced … there is very little focus really put on the internal world," she says.

"When you think of having good, strong self-esteem, what we are really talking about is the balance between looking good and feeling good."
