Learning from Your Mistakes

Oprah.com   |   January 01, 2008
Dr. Robin Smith
How do you react when you make a mistake? Do you put the blame on someone else? Do you deny it and say it wasn't really a mistake at all? Or do you own it, take responsibility and do what you can to make things right?

Each time you make a mistake, whether on purpose or accidentally, you have an opportunity to learn a valuable life lesson, Dr. Robin says. If you're caught up in trying to be perfect, blameless and flawless, she says you'll miss out on what your mistakes are trying to teach you. "Mistakes are only mistakes if you don't learn anything from them," she says.

Whatever you've done—or failed to do—can be transformed into an opportunity for growth if you're willing to recognize your errors, Dr. Robin says. "Take your mistakes and fill them at the pharmacy of life and redeem them for the lesson that they were in your life to teach you," she says.
