She may be married to musician Billy Joel, but Katie Lee Joel has made a name for herself through her talent in the kitchen. Katie talks to Gayle about her cookbook The Comfort Table and what it's really like to be married to Billy.
Katie says her love of cooking came from her grandmother, who she says taught her how to prepare food at just three or four years old. "She's my greatest culinary inspiration," Katie says. "She would bring a stool over to the kitchen counter and I would climb up." Katie says despite her husband's fame, when she first met him it didn't even cross her mind that he was a celebrity. "I think that I didn't have that whole star-struck thing because I wasn't a big fan, so I think we were able to relate on a different level," Katie says. "I think if I had been a super Billy Joel fan we probably wouldn't be where we are today." Katie says their similar interest in food is what connected them from the very beginning. "I would say it was love at first bite," Katie says. "He took me to a great restaurant and we had this unbelievable meal and we just talked about food the whole time. He's really into it too so that was kind of what we bonded over." Despite the age difference between the couple—he is 32 years her senior—Katie says at the end of the day, age doesn't matter. "I would rather spend time with [the man] that I love and be with him and not think about logically does it make sense," she says. "We work together well and we love each other and that's what matters most." Published on January 01, 2008
