Kathy Freston's Wellness Tips
Dr. Mehmet Oz

She inspired Oprah to go on a 21-day cleanse, and now Kathy Freston shares with Dr. Oz easy ways for everyone to incorporate healthier habits into their lifestyles. Dr. Oz talks with Kathy about her book Quantum Wellness: A Practical and Spiritual Guide to Health and Happiness and about why she's a believer in the power of eating, thinking and living healthfully and consciously.

While healthy living is now her way of life, Kathy says that wasn't always so. She used to smoke a pack of cigarettes a day and tried acupuncture, medication and hypnosis to stop. It wasn't until she embraced an overall healthier lifestyle that she was finally able to quit, she says. Kathy became a vegan, cutting dairy, eggs and meat from her diet, and soon found a better quality of life.

By eating and consuming consciously, Kathy says you can feel a positive shift in your mind, body and soul. "Be conscious of how things are made and processed, and by that awareness, things will naturally shift," she says. "I'm not advocating giving up meat or becoming a vegetarian or vegan—what I talk about is being conscious, just being aware, having your eyes open, your heart open."

Periodically, Kathy says she puts herself on a three-week cleanse—like the one Oprah tried—to recommit herself to living healthfully. "I think we all want a fresh start from time to time, and you want to reboot the system, and sometimes you want to start down a new and healthier road, but you need to clear out the old stuff first," she says. "After three weeks, your tastes have changed, you're not craving the same things you did before and it is sort of like a good, fresh start."

Eating consciously isn't Kathy's only path to wellness. She offers advice you can start using today to live healthier:
  • Remain aware. "Take things as they come and listen—let it move you and be willing to make a shift," she says. "That willingness will take you very far."
  • Practice mini-meditations. Ten breaths a day can change your life, Kathy says. "Just close your eyes, get centered and count to 10, and that mini-meditation will change your chemistry," she says. "It will relax your central nervous system, and you will also feel very grounded, inspired and creative."
  • Move a little bit. Take a walk around the block or walk a mile—do something to get your body moving, Kathy says. "Just nudge yourself in the direction of furthering your wellness, your healing," she says.
