It's Hip Hop, Baby!
She's an Emmy-winning talk show producer and mother, and now she's adding "entrepreneur" to her name. Candi Carter, who is now in her 12th year of working for The Oprah Winfrey Show, talks with Gayle about It's Hip Hop, Baby!, a series of educational videos she created to teach concepts to toddlers and preschoolers through hip-hop music.
Candi's son was born with a chromosome disorder, which affected his ability to learn. Because he can't speak, Candi says she began making up catchy tunes and beats to help him communicate, have fun and learn. Motivated by the progress her son was making, Candi says she came up with the idea for It's Hip Hop, Baby!, to combine music, dance routines and rhymes to teach important concepts such as letters, colors, numbers and animals. "The whole concept is that you use different parts of the brain at the same time to help children accelerate learning," she says. While Candi says the idea for It's Hip Hop, Baby! was sparked by her son and his delayed learning, the videos are for typical developing children. Combining music with language is one of the most effective ways to help all children learn, she says. "It works," she says. "It really does work for kids." Advertisement
