Whether you are looking to buy a single piece of art for your wall or want to start investing in an entire collection, there are many tools available today that can help you get started. Jean talks to Daniel Morris, co-founder of New York's Historical Design gallery, about how to start buying and collecting art and antiques.

Daniel's tips for buying art and antiques:
  • Visit a local museum. "The best thing to do is find something that inspires you or either recalls something that you liked in your childhood or something that you currently are interested in," Daniel says. "I think there is such a wide range of material available that you have to first find what moves you."
  • Go to local art shows. After you find what really inspires you as a collector, do some research by looking at any local or international auctions and try to begin to make comparisons of the pieces you like.
  • Use the Internet. If you see a piece out there that you like, do some research online and find out who the artist is. "You will be amazed at the kind of information that's out there."
  • Look in your attic. You never know where people travel to or what their family history is. Daniel says sometimes the most amazing pieces can turn up in places where you would never imagine them to be.
  • Buy pieces that interest you. Do you like antiques? Is your taste more art nouveau? Daniel says you should focus on what kind of art interests you and try to buy the best piece that you can afford from that period or that style.
