Are treatments that used to be considered far out—such as acupuncture, meditation and Reiki—now in? In recent years, many alternatives to traditional medicine have been gaining mainstream attention. Dr. Oz talks to Dr. Christy Mack, a leading proponent of integrative medicine, about the new frontiers of alternative medicine and the future of "mind-body medicine."
Dr. Mack is one of the founders of the Duke Center for Integrative Medicine. She says this first-of-its-kind medical facility is dedicated to exploring healthcare options that treat the whole person—mind, body and spirit. The center has been regarded by some to be an acknowledgment by the established medical community of the potential, although controversial, benefits of alternative therapies.
Dr. Mack is also certified as a Reiki practitioner, which is a Japanese form of alternative healing. She says that Reiki is one of the fastest growing healing modalities in the country. "Its premise is to draw from the universal energy which we use to stay healthy and to channel that through a Reiki practitioner into a client," Dr. Mack says.
