How to Be a Warrior

Dr. Robin Smith
What's your definition of a warrior? Someone who has no fear? Someone who is self-assured, with no worries, and stands in the face of danger? Dr. Robin says it's time to broaden your definition of a warrior by talking a cue from this quote from Buddhist nun Pema Chödrön: "A warrior accepts that we can never know what will happen to us next. We can try to control the uncontrollable by looking for security and predictability, always hoping to be comfortable and safe. But the truth is that we can never avoid uncertainty. This not-knowing is part of the adventure."

Dr. Robin says the quote is important because it helps you realize that life is often out of your control. "A real warrior accepts that they have no clue about what is going to happen to us in the next moment," Dr. Robin says. "It's not being perfect and flawless—it's [about] having every flaw and every imperfection and still knowing that you are enough."

The next time you feel uncertain or fearful about your path in life, Dr. Robin says you should think of Pema's quote and remember that living in the moment is the true way of a warrior. "Seize this moment, and seize it for the great adventure that you and I are on right now in this moment," Dr. Robin says.
