As America continues to send troops abroad, Dr. Angelou says it's important to be grateful for the men and women who have risked their lives to protect the country. Dr. Angelou talks with philanthropist Lois Pope about a memorial she's helping to create for disabled war veterans.
For more than a decade, Lois has been working on creating a Washington, D.C., memorial to honor the disabled soldiers who have served the country. She says it's equally as important to honor those who return home as it is to honor those who have lost their lives in war. "Long after the guns are silenced on the battlefield, these people do come home," Lois says. "They have to come home to a grueling rehabilitation, and then they have to re-emerge into society."
Lois hopes that by building the memorial, younger generations can learn how important the disabled veterans are and how much they gave for their country. "We must make people feel like they are wanted and respected, and that's what the memorial is all about," she says. "We must teach this generation the sacrifices of our disabled veterans."
