One of Nate's favorite sources for decorating inspiration is the big screen. Movie sets not only make up the actor's world, they can also provide ideas for shaping your own space, he says. Nate talks to Beth Rubino, an award-winning set designer and art director, about her work and how movies can affect your own design style.

Nate says he has long admired Beth's work, especially in the movie Something's Gotta Give. Her other credits include World Trade Center, Analyze That and The Holiday, along with an Oscar® nomination for best art direction for The Cider House Rules.

When creating a set for a film, Beth says her designs help both the actors and the viewers better understand the characters—their likes and dislikes, and who they really are. She says your home should say the same thing about you and your family.

"What people can bring to their own home is really make thoughtful decisions of things that they enjoy," Beth says. "It doesn't have to be right or wrong, it's just things that really make them happy or things that they want to look at in their home. And when you define that—when these elements are in your house—someone walks in, they know who you are."

Before becoming one of the top set designers in Hollywood, Beth says she was an artist struggling to make ends meet in New York City. She ventured into theater for more work before making the natural progression into film. In addition to set designs, Beth also does residential and commercial projects that evolved from her popular work for movies.

When she's not busy jetting between Los Angeles and New York for work, Beth says she enjoys renovating the farm that she purchased with her husband in northern Connecticut. Beth calls the beautiful property—which has a carriage barn, dairy barn, stone pumphouse and main house—her "diamond in the rough."
