With six Stanley Cup championships to his name, and a professional hockey career spanning four decades, Mark Messier is a legend in his sport. Now, more than a year into retirement, Mark is on to other challenges. Dr. Oz talks with Mark about the secrets of staying fit and being a positive, healthy role model for others.
Not many professional athletes can stay in the game for 26 years, but retired New York Ranger Mark Messier is not a typical hockey player. Mark says having a certain amount of talent, and no career-ending injuries, has helped him defy the odds and win championships. However, there is more to Mark's career than talent and luck. "For me, there is a certain amount of dedication and commitment to excellence and conditioning," Mark says, "all of those things combined is the reason why I was able to play 25, 26 years as a professional."
Mark says he knows that kids look up to professional athletes and he tries to be a good role model for young people. Not only does he talk to kids about his career in hockey, Mark says he hopes to educate them about "what it means to be healthy and the importance of staying healthy." Starting each day with a wholesome breakfast is part of Mark's daily routine, along with a varied workout in the gym. While he doesn't train as hard as he did as a pro athlete, Mark incorporates at least a half hour of cardio, yoga and weight training every day. As a kid, Mark says his father was his coach and role model, and thinks that parents and coaches should help inspire kids to keep athletics part of their daily lives.
