Health of a Nation
Dr. Mehmet Oz
He was the healthcare leader for an entire nation. Dr. Oz talks to Dr. David Satcher, who served as the 16th Surgeon General of the United States, about his initiatives to improve the health of Americans. Dr. Satcher implemented a wide range of programs, including the Healthy People 2010 initiative. He says the goal of Healthy People 2010 is to ensure that individuals, communities and professionals take measures to ensure that good health and a long life are enjoyed by all Americans.

Other issues Dr. Satcher addressed during his tenure were sexual health and children's health. Dr. Satcher has pushed for initiatives for better sexual health for Americans and says a mature, thoughtful nationwide discussion is critical to improve sexual health and increase responsible behavior.

When it comes to children's health, Dr. Satcher says that, as a society, citizens play an important role in ensuring the health of future generations. According to Dr. Satcher, the elimination of physical education in schools is a contributing factor to the poor state of American children's health.

Today, Dr. Satcher says his mission continues to be making medicine and public health work for all groups across the country. He outlines some of the huge differences between how different groups in the nation receive their healthcare, and says that eliminating health disparities in the U.S. should be a top priority.
