Dr. Maya Angelou

While Dr. Angelou often deals with matters of the mind—our emotions, feelings and spirit—today, she tackles the other side of the human equation: our physical bodies. "The human body…what an incredible map of mysteries!" Dr. Angelou says. She speaks with three physicians who she says are experts when it comes to understanding our heads, heart and every breath we take.

Dr. Levi Watkins Jr., the first person to perform a human implantation of the automatic defibrillator, talks about his life journey as a pioneering African-American heart surgeon. Dr. Peter Jannetta talks with Dr. Angelou about his work as a world-renowned neurosurgeon specializing in the treatment of cranial nerve disorders. Finally, pulmonary disease physician Dr. Edward Haponik talks about his latest studies on aging Americans, end-of-life care and how we might extend the human life beyond its present limits.
