Bob takes listeners' calls and e-mailsĀ and answer all their dieting, exercise and wellness questions. He talks with callers about losing weight after quitting smoking, the best multivitamins and additives and how to address emotional eating.
Q: I quit smoking six months ago, and since then I've gained 20 pounds. I feel out of control, like I switched addictions. What should I do? A: If you had to name the single best thing you could do for health, it would be quitting smoking, Bob says. If done correctly, exercise is important because it will challenge your body and raise your metabolism. Bob says to do highly aerobic activities, such as the elliptical, aerobic dance and uphill walking. Don't go on an aggressive diet, he says. Try to lose only a pound or two a week at the most. Q: My family and I love going to get smoothies. If I make my own, where do I get the multivitamins the stores put in their smoothies and what should I use? A: Not a fan of supplementing smoothies, Bob says to take a multivitamin. Depending on your age, calcium can really be important too, and he recommends you also take an omega-3 fatty acid supplement. Bob says omega-3s make you feel good and help fight disease, and there's research that indicates they also help enhance our moods. Q: I'm an emotional eater who wants to get back on track. I do cardio, lift weights and then come home and eat whatever. How can I stop the emotional eating? A: "There are elements of your life that make food much more comforting than it needs to be," Bob says. "Find ways to restructure your life where you're not prone to using food for emotional reasons." When you start to feel the urge, take out a journal and start writing, Bob says. "Start to make some healthy choices, but until you get those other elements under control, that's when you're going to have success," he says.
