Hate in America
Have you contributed to sexism, racism or hatred toward others in some way? Maybe you laugh at a joke that makes fun of minorities. Perhaps you use the n-word around friends and family or call gay people on TV the f-word. No matter how minor your contribution may be, Dr. Robin says you are part of a painful problem in America that needs to be solved. "If you want to be well and you want your children and grandchildren to inherit a rich legacy of truly being Americans, we have got to start coming out of hiding," she says.
Self-hatred can often lead to the hatred of others, and Dr. Robin says acknowledging your biases may be the first step toward self-love and a fair-minded society. "I want you today to examine yourself…sit down and have a little talk with yourself about your own biases, about the parts of you that are hidden that keep showing up," Dr. Robin says. "What lies beneath comes out. It can't come out if it is not in you."
