What makes a good father? Dads can't fix everything, but what they can do is take their child's feelings seriously, whether the child is 4 years old or in college, Dr. Robin says.
What it means to be a dad is to offer a place where your child can explore her feelings, failures and the places where she has made mistakes, Dr. Robin says. "[Being a good father] is the ability to realize when you have made a mistake. To realize it, to own it, not just to yourself but to your child," she says. "Let your child know that their dad is still growing, is still interested in repairing where things have been broken down." Published on July 29, 2008
