Giving to Charity
Jean Chatzky
Deciding which organizations or charities to donate your time and money to can be overwhelming, but Lisa Dietlin says it doesn't have to be. Jean talks with Lisa about her company, which helps individuals and companies turn acts of philanthropy into focused and fulfilling gifts.

Lisa also shares strategies for giving to charity:

  • Choose your charities. Lisa says that one of the first steps in making a strategic plan for charitable giving is to limit yourself. "You need to identify three areas or causes you care about," she says. "If you get beyond three, you are not going to have much time or dollars to give to those organizations."
  • Decide how much to give. "I recommend that you do an [financial] audit or assess where you are currently giving your time and money and [ask yourself], do any of those things really resonate with you?" Lisa says.
  • Know you can be flexible. Lisa says that no matter where you decide to donate your time and money, you have the right to change your mind from year to year and donate to different causes that speak to you. "You go through phases—for example, when your kids are young you might be very involved in the organizations that support the school they attend," she says. "As they age other causes come to mind and it is okay to change your mind."
