When's the last time you assisted yourself before you tried to help someone else? Just like when you're on an airplane and you're instructed to assist yourself with your oxygen mask before helping others, Dr. Robin says the same concept applies to everyday life.
If you have something big on your plate that's depleting you of all your energy, Dr. Robin says today may be the day to step back and take care of and replenish yourself before you step back into the role of helping others. "Take care of yourself, feed yourself from your own pot of joy, and I guarantee you that you will have more to give the people that depend on you. You will have something real to give them," she says.
"You've got to replenish your own tank if you are going to be any good to your children, to your elderly parents," Dr. Robin says. "Go put your own 'oxygen mask' on, refuel your own tank and then return to those you love with all power and vitality."
