Getting Out of Hell

Oprah.com   |   August 07, 2008
Dr. Robin Smith
Whether you grew up around a lot of chaos or a lot of peace, what you were really born to live in is liberty, freedom, justice and respect, Dr. Robin says. She discusses the importance of removing yourself from a bad situation as opposed to "air conditioning" the situation to temporarily make it seem better.

If something is going wrong in your life—in your marriage or in your job—and you are being berated, demeaned, neglected and disrespected, what do you do? Dr. Robin says if you are like the way she used to be, you go out and buy the highest powered air conditioner you can to make it "cooler in hell."

Instead of covering up the uncomfortable situation with an "air conditioner," you need to get out of that situation completely, Dr. Robin says. "If we are in the midst of misery, in the middle of a mess that we don't belong in, your job is not to go and save your money and bring an air conditioner down to cool the abuse," she says. "It's [your job] to get out of the abuse, to get out of hell."
