At the invitation of heart-health expert Dr. Dean Ornish, Gayle and her daughter, Kirby, went on a weekend retreat in Sausalito, California, to experience firsthand Dr. Ornish's program for health and wellness. Gayle is joined by Kirby to talk about what they gained from the experience, which involved seminars on nutrition, meditation and yoga.
While Gayle says she did not enjoy the yoga, she learned many valuable lessons about how diet affects a person's overall well-being. By simply eating less meat or substituting whole grain bread for white bread, she says Dr. Ornish drove home the point that every little bit counts. "You can make small changes in your life that drastically affect your life," Gayle says.
Kirby says her greatest takeaway was learning that genetics may play less of a role in determining a person's health than previously believed. According to Dr. Ornish, you can change your body and improve your health by the way you live. "The whole lifestyle change—not just your diet but your exercise, meditation, all of that—has a bigger impact than I realized it did," Kirby says.
