What is freedom? American writer and scholar Ralph Ellison once said, "When I discover who I am, I'll be free." As we celebrate Independence Day and our nation's freedom, Dr. Robin calls on us to reflect on Ellison's words and to recognize what truly gives us our freedom as individuals. "What really makes us free is understanding who we are," she says. "It's a process, it's a journey, as you're uncovering all the layers of what makes up who you are."
What it means to be free, Dr. Robin says, is that you're able to decide who it is you are and who you want to be. Your life and your destiny are not defined by where you were born, the color of your skin or how much money you have, she says. This Fourth of July, Dr. Robin encourages us to embrace our personal freedom. "Define and then put the behaviors behind that definition about who you're going to be—and that's not based on anyone except you," she says.
