He's been designing couture clothes for more than 20 years and most recently brought high-end fashion to the big-box store Target. Soon, Isaac Mizrahi will take on the task of revamping the Liz Claiborne label. Between his many projects and his latest collection debuting at New York Fashion Week, Isaac has much to share with Gayle!
Isaac says his latest collection is the best yet. "This time, I swear, I feel like technically my whole staff made this huge leap … in terms of the way the clothes are made and the way they feel in the hand," he says. "We are really communicating, and it is just now hitting its stride."
While the spectators and designers at New York Fashion Week can be a tough crowd to please, Isaac says his fashion is made to appeal to everyone. "The smart [designers] really understand and realize there is a big world that fashion has to fit into," he says. "It's easy enough to sell a dress by intimidating somebody, but I don't believe in that. I really don't. I think you need to reach out to all women and men."
Isaac says he tries not to follow trends—in fact, much of the inspiration for his fashion comes from outside the industry. "I get ideas from old movies; I get ideas from the museum," he says. Choosing perfect colors for his designs is an important part of his work, but Isaac says he struggles to find the right shades. "I am on this quest to find perfect blue," he says. "I have a crazy condition [when it comes to] colors."
Starting in 2009, Isaac will be leaving his post at Target and taking over the creative reins at Liz Claiborne Inc. While he says he can't reveal any details about his upcoming position, he does say providing both high-end and inexpensive pieces will continue to be part of his philosophy as a designer. "I don't know how you wear designer clothes from head to toe!" he says. "I think it is important to mix things up."
