Everyday Spring-Cleaning
Peter Walsh

Do you have a closet or garage that's driving you crazy with clutter? Spring may seem like the perfect time of year tackle the project, but Peter says in-depth cleaning shouldn't be a seasonal thing. "When you talk about 'spring-cleaning,' it really makes it an event rather than a process," Peter says. "I'm much more a fan of the concept that spring-cleaning or organizing is something you have to tackle in a little way every day." Peter talks with listeners from across the country who share their best cleaning tips.

Everyday Spring-Cleaning Tips:
  • Invest in an extension cord. By using one long extension cord, you can vacuum your entire house without stopping to unplug the cord and plug it in again. This saves you time and energy.
  • Go green! Use vinegar and water to wash your windows instead of commercial cleaning products. Also, stick a bowl of water and lemon slices in the microwave and bring it to a boil, then use the hot, lemon-scented water to clean the microwave.
  • Spruce up your space. Use spring as a time to paint rooms, buy a new rug or change a duvet cover—sprucing up with little changes can make a big difference, Peter says.
  • Clear out the toy box. Fill a storage container with toys and stow them away for six months or so. When you take them out of storage, your children will feel like they have "new" toys to play with, Peter says.
  • Check in on finances. In between cleaning, call your credit card and insurance companies and ask for lower rates.
  • Spring clean your life. Get rid of the mind clutter and negative thoughts filling your mind and start fresh with a positive outlook on life.
