Negative messages we hear as children about love, money and success are often ingrained in our minds long into adulthood, Dr. Robin says. If there is an area of your life that you struggle with, Dr. Robin says the way you were brought up could be to blame.
If you're having problems with finances, take a closer look at how you were raised to think about money. "What were the messages in your childhood about money, about making money, about saving money, about sharing money, about being responsible?" Dr. Robin asks. "Then, look at how your actions—your day-to-day actions—match up with what that destructive message is telling you and creating."
Once you recognize that destructive messages from your past are affecting your present and future, Dr. Robin says you must take action. "I want you to create a new message, very simplistic and easy to follow. It might be as simple as this, 'I am capable of managing and balancing my checkbook,'" she says.
By erasing the old message that is messing up important areas of your life, Dr. Robin says you can take back your power and live the life you want.
