Every now and then someone in your life rubs you the wrong way, and no matter how hard you try, you cannot foster a relationship with them. Maybe you hired a contractor to make repairs on your home, but now you feel like your relationship with him is draining and cumbersome. Perhaps an old friend is now grating on your nerves and you are avoiding her phone calls. "When your gut tells you that something isn't good for you, pay attention," Dr. Robin says.
Before the situation blows up in your face, Dr. Robin says you should tell the person that the relationship is just not working for you. "Find a respectful way … to say, 'It's just not working,' and bless them and bless yourself to go and live your best life," she says. It may be difficult to say those words, but Dr. Robin says you have to follow your instincts. "Make sure the people in your life … that whoever it is up-close and personal in your life, belongs there," she says.
