Is it possible to eat all your favorite foods and still lose weight? Absolutely, says Men's Health editor in chief David Zinczenko. David talks with Gayle about his book Eat This, Not That: Thousands of Simple Food Swaps That Can Save You 10, 20, 30 Pounds—or More! and details how to make simple food choices that can help you drop the weight.
David and his team of researchers spent over a year collecting nutritional information from popular restaurants and fast food chains all over the country. "A lot of people don't have this information," says David. "That's why we made it our mission to go find it." He says the book is not about being on a diet and depriving yourself, but rather about making the right choices. "We want to make it about enjoying all those foods that you want but just realizing what you are eating," he says. What people don't realize, David says, is that every time they eat at a restaurant they typically underestimate their food consumption by about 600 calories. "If you realize a way to eat all these foods but save yourself 500 calories a day, and you make a swap every day, you will lose a pound a week," he says. "You are never depriving yourself and you are never dieting." We often don't realize how much fat, sodium and other ingredients, like high-fructose corn syrup, are being pumped into our foods, David says. He believes that's why your weight is not your fault—because companies are not revealing the nutritional information to help you make the right choices. "I am on a mission to get these companies to serve up the nutritional information and I am not going to stop until everyone does," he says. Published on January 01, 2008
