Are you trying to forge a relationship with a co-worker or family member, but just can't seem to feel comfortable around that person? In times like these, Dr. Robin says you are forcing yourself to be someone you're not. "When you feel that there is not enough room to breathe, when you feel there is not enough room for you to be who you really are … you are trying to somehow force yourself into a mold, into a model where you don't fit," she says.
Instead of forcing yourself to like someone or something, Dr. Robin says you should just offer up some compassion and continue on with your life. "Let things be what they are, and then you can come from a place of honesty and truthfulness and allow the moment to be what it is in its richness, in its fullness and its reality," she says. You may never like your new job and move on to another, or you may remain on polite but not extra-friendly terms with a family member, but at least you know you haven't wasted energy being someone you're not, Dr. Robin says.
