It's been 18 years since Dr. Robin's father died, and though she says she thinks about him every day, she takes some extra time near the anniversary of his death to reflect on his life. Luckily, Dr. Robin says she knows a lot about her father's life because, the year before his death, she sat him down with a tape recorder and interviewed him. "I asked him about his life, his journey, his legacy, his suffering," she says.
The little nuggets of information about her father's life that he shared that day are forever captured on tape and in Dr. Robin's memory, and she says it's a constant tribute to her father's life. She suggests taking the time to videotape or make an audio recording with someone you love. "If you have the opportunity—and your loved one may be a parent or spouse—and [you have] something you need to say or do, why don't you do it now while you still have the time?" she asks. "Take a piece out of my life's story and a page out of my journey and my journal and use it so it can be helpful and useful and empowering to your own life and your own journey."
