When you go to the dentist and she tells you that you need to brush and floss more often, how do you react? Dr. Robin says her dentist has patients who act shocked and say they do brush and floss every day—even though the dentist can tell they don't. "Stop lying, covering up and denying to your hygienist and dentist what they already can see, because your mouth tells the story," Dr. Robin says.
Just as your dentist can see past your efforts to lie about your dental hygiene, Dr. Robin says those close to you can see the truth in other aspects of your life. "We've got to start to tell the truth because someone who gets close enough … is going to know the truth," she says.
Don't deny your partner's infidelity, your child's behavioral problems, the credit card debt you are racking up or whatever aspect of your life you are trying to gloss over, Dr. Robin says. "Let's stop running from the truth and face it so we can do something and make it better," she says. "We can rectify what is wrong by walking in the light of the truth."
