Dating for Sistas
Gayle King

As a romance columnist for Essence magazine, Saturday Night Live alum Finesse Mitchell is sharing more of his humorous advice on dating and relationships in his new book, Your Girlfriends Only Know So Much: A Brother's Take on Dating and Mating for Sistas. Finesse talks with Gayle about the way men really think and shares male insight on flirting, first dates and sex.

When it comes to flirting, Finesse says all women need to do is make eye contact with a man they like and then look away. The man will approach you if he thinks you are his type, Finesse says. "Men love to chase, but they love to chase things they think they have a shot at," he says.

To keep a first date comfortable, Finesse says you could do breakfast or lunch, but he says the best first date is at the bowling alley. "You get to see if the person you are dating is competitive, you get to see if they can take a razzing and you get to watch them bend over in front of you at least 10 or 12 times, right?" he says. Finesse says the worst first dates are at amusement parks, fairs or carnivals. "You are walking around in the hot sun at a fair with someone that you have just figured out 30 minutes later you don't like," he says.

If you continue to see each other after the first date and start a relationship, Finesse says you should make sure sex is a priority. "Some women just cut [sex] off—they shut that store down and they don't leave no sign on the door or nothing [about] when it is going to reopen," he jokes. "So, the next thing you know, men go window shopping."

While his advice may be surprising to some women, Finesse says women with men in their inner-circle know it's the truth. "I think women out there who have older brothers and women out there who have a lot of male friends are ahead of the game when it comes to dating because they get the inside information," he says.
