Cravings, Constipation and More
Bob Greene
Bob is back in the studio taking calls from listeners and answering their burning questions about strength training, sugar cravings and constipation.

I am a woman in my mid-30s. Will strength training make me bulk up?

Bob says the idea that women will bulk up if they strength train is a myth. "Hormonally, a female past 25 or 30 just doesn't bulk up," Bob says. "They might lose fat and then their muscle becomes more defined [through strength training] and they might not like that look, but for the most part, there is not a lot of muscle being added past the age of 30."

Bob says strength training should be a part of everyone's fitness routine—not only does it help you lose weight, but it also combats the effects of aging by keeping your bones, joints and muscles strong. "Aging is the process where you are oxidizing body tissue, in particular muscle and bone, and you don't want to lose those things," he says.

I crave sweets every afternoon and it's derailing my diet! Can I be addicted to sugar?

Bob says that a craving for sugar is very similar to an addiction. Sugar, fat and salt give people pleasure, and after time, your body wants more of those foods more often, he says. "It really is like an addiction where it requires more for the same pleasure hit," Bob says. "The amazing thing is when you start scaling back on sugar and salt in particular, you start to taste the natural sweetness in food and kind of reverse the whole [addiction] process."

I quit smoking after 40 years of a one- to two-pack-a-day habit and now I am constantly constipated. Are these two occurrences related?

Chances are the constipation is directly related to kicking the smoking habit because smoking is a stimulant that helps with regularity, Bob says. Instead of using a laxative, Bob suggests using a morning workout as a stimulant. "If you woke up, laced up your sneakers and took a walk ...it will heat your body up and stimulate the regularity," he says. "It will also cut down on your [cigarette] cravings."
