Combating Hunger in Africa

Dr. Mehmet Oz
Poverty and hunger are among the greatest problems facing our planet today, and two pioneering individuals are rethinking ways to eradicate them. Dr. Oz talks with Kristin Walter, director of FeelGood, and Joan Holmes, founding president of The Hunger Project, about the work they're doing to help end hunger in Africa.

According to Joan, those suffering from hunger must ultimately become the solution to the challenges they face. She says The Hunger Project, a nonprofit organization committed to ending world hunger, operates by giving people the tools they need to provide for themselves. "We do not go into any country and give things like food or anything else—we're not a relief organization," Joan says. "The whole name of the game is to work with people to let them know that we know that they are the authors of their own development."

Kristin, who shares Joan's passion to combat hunger in Africa, says she co-founded FeelGood as a student organization at the University of Texas, offering simple grilled cheese sandwiches in exchange for a donation to end hunger. The program grew to include student-run delis, and money from FeelGood has gone toward multiple organizations, including The Hunger Project. Kristin says she wants to empower more college students to get inspired and involved in the fight against world hunger. "My love is working with college students to empower them to be changemakers," she says.
