Chrysler Group's Ralph Gilles
Gayle King
If you don't know his name, you certainly know his work—Ralph Gilles is the man behind the award-winning Chrysler 300, named the 2005 Motor Trend Car of the Year. Gayle talks to Ralph, Chrysler Group's new vice president of Jeep/Truck and Component Design, about his passion for cars.

Like many car enthusiasts, Ralph says his love of cars began when he was a young boy. At the age of 6, Ralph says he was already looking for ways to create his own concepts or improve on existing models, and he would sketch out his ideas and read all the car magazines he could get his hands on.

Today, Ralph is a successful car designer who has become known as a superstar in the industry. For Ralph, great car design is timeless, "just like good fashion, good art, good wine, good music is timeless," he says. "The car may not look new, but it should still look good in 10 years."

Ralph says he gets much of his inspiration from the team of talented and creative designers that he works with at Chrysler. He says another invaluable source for feedback is someone who may not be a car expert but knows what customers want—his wife, Doris. "I put her in a car and I say, 'Tell me the first thing that comes to your mind—what do you like, what don't you like?'" he says.
