Gayle King

For the past decade, Art Smith has wowed Oprah with delicious dishes as her personal chef…and more recently, he's opened up the restaurant Table Fifty-Two in Chicago. Now, Art is sharing his philosophy on food and love with women across the country at O, The Oprah Magazine's O You! event in Miami. Gayle talks with Art about his career and the importance of sharing good food with the people you love.

Art grew up on a farm in northern Florida and was taught the art of cooking and sharing food with others by an African-American woman who babysat him during childhood. His love for food and cooking sparked a career as a chef, and Art says he began preparing meals at the Florida Governor's Mansion during his early 20s.

From there, Art says his career took him around the world. Today he is the author of several cookbooks and the owner of the restaurant Table Fifty-Two in Chicago. He also started a nonprofit organization called Common Threads, an after-school program that aims to teach children about cooking and the arts. "Food is a time capsule and it's a way for us to remember all of those great things of life," Art says. "We all underestimate the power of food."
