Dr. Robin Smith

How often do you check your smoke detector, carbon monoxide detector or your house alarm system to make sure they're working? Dr. Robin says detectors and alarm systems are designed to keep you safe, and you should check them several times a year to make sure they're in working order.

The same goes for your own internal alarm system, Dr. Robin says. "Don't bury your head in the sand—not from the smoke detector and not from your internal gut," she says. "It will help you and it will help [to] save your very life."

While keeping your home alarms and detectors in working order may mean buying batteries a few times a year, Dr. Robin says your internal alarm system is free. "You don't have to pay for it, you don't have to regulate it—all you have to do is learn to listen to it, to trust it and take action—and then you can create a life that is safe from the inside out," she says.
