This New Hampshire dad got his 5-month-old daughter's picture taken with nearly every 2008 presidential candidate! Darren Garnick talks with Gayle about his quirky quest to create some very original photo memories for his daughter, as well as how the candidates reacted when asked to hold his baby.
Darren says he loves taking picture of his kids, so photographing Dahlia with politicians was a natural offshoot of his hobby. "In a way, these politicians are just like a bunch of cartoon characters to me," he says. And it wasn't difficult to meet up with nearly all the candidates face-to-face at various campaign events—Darren says all he had to do was arrive early and politely but aggressively ask each candidate to get the shots he wanted. So how did the candidates react? Some were attentive and genuine, while others looked as though they were "going through the motions." One even returned Dahlia to her father's arms the moment she started crying! As to why the candidates all agreed to pose with Dahlia, Darren guesses they were photo-ops they couldn't pass up. "I just got a sense that some of the candidates dig it and some don't, but why they do it? It's great propaganda," he says.
