Anna Deavere Smith
Gayle and Anna Deavere Smith
What is love? There are certainly many facets, from divine love to parent-child love to romantic love. Gayle explores the mystery of love with actress and playwright Anna Deavere Smith, who is the narrator of the PBS documentary The Mystery of Love.

"We see that there are all different kinds of love," Anna says. From friendship to romance to altruism to family, the documentary features personal stories and explores the various types of love that give meaning to life. "We should do what we can to try to make the presence of love clearer," she says.

Anna also talks to Gayle about her own loves and passions. An accomplished actress, who has starred in TV's The West Wing and her own, one-woman Broadway play, Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992, Anna says she didn't always know what she wanted to do. After college, wanting to delve into the world of social change, she headed from Baltimore to California with just $80.

"I find my way to San Francisco, and by fluke, I'm in this acting class one day and I'm thinking, 'People are changing! So maybe I should learn about this—how to change a person, before I start to think about social change,'" Anna says. "And then I kind of just got sucked into that whole thing and that's how I became an actress."
