Singer, actress and dancer Janet Jackson is the ultimate triple threat, and at age 41, she says she is just getting started on her movie career. Gayle talks with Janet about her longtime career in entertainment and her role in the new movie Why Did I Get Married?
As a child TV actress of the '60s and '70s, Janet became a household name in such shows as Good Times and Diff'rent Strokes. By the time she was a teen, singing and dancing became her focus, and today she holds five Grammy awards. While she released her ninth studio album in 2006, Janet says her music isn't always part of her daily life. "The only time I listen to my music is when I'm recording it [or] when I'm about to do a tour," she says. "Then I have to pull out all of the stuff. … I have written so many songs I forget the lyrics!"
Her latest project is Tyler Perry's film Why Did I Get Married?—a film she says she fell in love with instantly. "It is only my third film, even though [acting] is a passion I have had since I was a kid," she says. While the movie focuses on commitment, infidelity and other problems in the lives of married couples, Janet says in real life, her longtime relationship with hip-hop mogul Jermaine Dupri is the best she has ever had. "It is a different place with him than my other relationships or past marriages," she says. "It was very early on with Jermaine knowing that he was the one. We are so much alike it is frightening—in a great way."
