She's appeared in more than 60 movies and dozens of television shows, but now, actress Jenifer Lewis is devoting all her time and energy to Broadway. Jenifer talks with Gayle about her role in the musical Hairspray and about what success means to her.
As Motormouth Maybelle in Hairspray, Jenifer says she's dedicated to giving the best performance she can. "I give 2,000 percent when I am onstage—I bring the house down," Jenifer says. "When I go out and sign autographs after the show, that is what the audience tells me. They don't say, 'Oh, you were good.' They say, 'What a voice—you moved me.'" In addition to her work onscreen and onstage, Jenifer spends much of her time helping others in need. "Having done all those films and television and being successful right now, all I want to do is give back at this point in my life," she says. "There's nothing else for me." Despite battling bipolar disorder for years, Jenifer says she is now comfortable in her own skin and doesn't care what other people think about her. "It's what I've done in my life that has made me who I am at this moment," she says. "I am very much in my skin and know that I am a good person." Published on January 01, 2008
