In the early 1900s, before the American Medical Association began regulating medical procedures, many con artists looking to make a buck performed outrageous procedures and sold faux treatments. One such infamous man was John Brinkley, the subject of author Pope Brock's book Charlatan: America's Most Dangerous Huckster, the Man Who Pursued Him, and the Age of Flimflam.
