Since meeting more than 20 years ago at the University of Pennsylvania, Jean and Rabbi Lisa Greene have remained close friends. After a stint on Wall Street, Rabbi Lisa attended rabbinate school, and is currently serving at North Shore Congregation Israel in Glencoe, Illinois. Jean talks with Rabbi Lisa about her career, spirituality and how to give what you can in these difficult economic times.
When money is tight, Rabbi Lisa says giving isn't just about giving financially—it's also about giving yourself. "Focus on a learning opportunity, helping someone in your life or community," she says. For example, when Rabbi Lisa takes her daughter to the grocery store, she asks what kinds of foods they can buy for people who are less fortunate. "We look at the people in our lives, what we're able to do and what we're able to learn about the difference we can make in the world," she says.
