Walter Kirn's wildly original fiction The Unbinding (Anchor), now in book form, was written serially for Slate in 2006. His twisty narrative about "the plight of what people used to call 'the self' in an age of high-tech snooping" is still a thrill for those who like their intrigue hot off the press.
