The Best Way to Say No

Jancee Dunn Polls the Experts

Q: What's the best way to deal with the co-worker who always asks a favor but can never help you out?

A: "Women must learn not to justify themselves all the time. Remember the Take Back the Night candlelight vigils with your women's studies class in college when you'd chant 'No means no' over and over? Well, even if you don't sleep on a futon and smell like patchouli anymore, no still means no. Say this without embellishment: 'I wish I could, but I can't.' Try it now. Go on, say it. It feels good."
