With her new e-book, Maria Shriver plans to make some noise in Washington.
Women make up nearly half of the U.S. workforce, yet almost two of every three people earning minimum wage are female and vast numbers in this country are living paycheck to paycheck. Maria Shriver examines their situation in her new e-book, A Woman's Nation Pushes Back from the Brink, the third in her series of Special Reports investigating the lives of modern women. "A working woman with a child and probably even a parent to care for," says Shriver, "is the new face of economic insecurity."

Shriver hopes the book will be "a reality check for Washington," with heartening news like studies that show 87 percent of men support equal pay for equal work and nearly 60 percent of Americans want government and private assistance for single moms (are you listening, policymakers?). To give the report a human face, Shriver weaves in personal narratives from a mix of ordinary people, academics, business leaders and celebrities, including LeBron James, who writes about his mom.

"A lot of the conversation around women focuses on the 1 or 2 percent who are doing incredibly well, wondering if they can have it all," Shriver says. "But we're looking at the majority who are already doing it all—working, providing, parenting, caretaking—and who feel that there is no floor for them to stand on, much less a glass ceiling to crack!"
