Q. Can I wear my open-toed shoes from summer with tights in the fall? A. Yes, you can. Hosiery is hot, and this formerly taboo combination can work; the key is opaque hose, not sheer. Any old shoe won't do: You need fairly chunky high heels (flat sandals with hose are beyond ugly). I find that metallics and deep colors work best (no pastels). And please make sure your tights don't have those unsightly reinforced toes.
The match game—shoes and hose in similar colors—is the sleekest way to play.
