The Swag Country Inn, Waynesville, NC
Thirty minutes outside Asheville, the Swag Country Inn—named for the dip between the peaks where it sits—borders the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, giving visitors a private experience by one of the nation's busiest parks. Besides hiking and spotting wildlife, you can visit up to 90 preserved historic structures, from churches to outbuildings, says Swag Country Inn staffer Sarah Franquet. On Wednesdays, you might choose to enjoy a gourmet picnic, courtesy of executive chef Bryan Kimmett, atop the inn's Gooseberry Knob. Be sure to take a close look at the inn's exterior—the Swag is built from centuries-old hand-hewn logs brought in from an old church in Tennessee.

Churchill Manor Bed and Breakfast, Napa, CA
After a long day of wine tasting (hey, it's hard work!), you could relax in a stately mansion located on a quiet, tree-lined street just a short stroll from the Napa riverfront. Built in 1889, Churchill Manor was the first residence in Napa to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and all the original woodwork, including redwood mantels and pocket doors, has been left virtually untouched. For a unique view of Napa's vineyards, ask one of the nearby hot-air balloon companies to pick you up at the inn for a sunrise experience, suggests innkeeper Joanna Guidotti. (Balloons have to land before winds pick up at 9 a.m., so this activity is best for early birds.)
