Behind the scenes with January Jones and O editors Adam Glassman and Ann Caruso

A Modern Day Grace Kelly
In O's October 2008 issue, January Jones plays style icon in Grace Kelly–inspired fashion. We went behind the scenes of her Hollywood fashion shoot.

January Jones, star of AMC's Mad Men, was the perfect pick to evoke classic Grace Kelly glamour in the pages of O. "She really got into character," says creative director Adam Glassman. She knows the genre and was very involved in picking the outfits and accessories." Plus, he adds, "Everything works on her." We're only a little jealous.

On Set
On the first day of shooting, the crew captures a little bit of on-set Hollywood (and a lot of movie star big hair!) at Quixote Studios. Here, January recreates an in-between-shots touch-up.

Double-Take
Old scripts, vintage film cameras, sculpted hair and long, oval-shaped nails capture the era to a tee. A matte coral-tinted lipstick (like the one makeup artist Christy Coleman used, YSL Pure Lipstick in Rosy Coral) finishes off the look.

Getting Faux-togenic
It takes a lot of work to look so casually elegant! Fashion assistant Kathryn, wardrobe stylist Ann Caruso, and a seamstress make sure the Juicy Couture faux fur coat ($478) rests "as nonchalantly on her shoulders as possible," says Adam. Funny enough, January herself has no such Hollywood attitude. "She's a great sport," Adam adds, "She had no entourage and wore jeans and a T-shirt to the shoot!"

On Location in the Hollywood Hills
January and Ann strike a pose high above Los Angeles, just outside the private house Adam and the team used on Day 2 of the shoot. "The photos were meant to look like when Life magazine used to photograph celebrities in their homes," Adam explains. And instead of the rigid undergarments and vintage clothing January wears on Mad Men, O went in search of comfort. This modern striped turtleneck (Vince, $85) and soft floral taffeta skirt (Jason Wu, $1300) are true to the era, look good on almost every shape—and you can breathe in them.

Anyone for Tea?
"Everything in the house was there, except for a few small props and the flowers," says Adam of the location, which is actually in the same neighborhood as January's own home. (Her boyfriend and dog stopped by!) Prop stylist Susan Anderson's touches, like these pink and white peonies, roses, and delicate tea set, set a 60s mood, (while Ann stands by in approval!).

The Evita Moment
January's knee-length J.Crew dress ($328) brightens up the gray balcony, while Kathryn clasps the perfect accent—a pearl bracelet.

Opening Snap!
A quick walk downstairs brings January and photographer Todd Marshard to the opening shot of our story—and one that perfectly captures the essence of Grace. "January knew how to find her spot and her mood," says Adam. "She evoked the spirit of Grace Kelly and was utter perfection for this shoot."

Classic Jewelry, with a Twist
While Ann styles the gorgeous Tom Binns necklace—which January picked out herself—hairstylist Rob Talty works on maintaining her pristine 60s 'do. "Grace Kelly wore a lot of pearls," Adam says, "and this necklace is a new take on them—an unusual mix of pearls and rhinestones are the modern twist."

The Personal Touch
Speaking of jewelry, look at our team's endless options! "You wore a lot of personal jewelry back then," says Adam. And those personal items were, more often than not, pearls and brooches. Lucky for us, colorful, unique pieces are in for fall. "This is the new take on the brooch," says Adam. "They're making a comeback!"

Getting the Look Just Right
Rob puts the finishing touches on January's "stay-at-home" look. "This was a time when women would never think of not having their hair done," says Adam.

Time Out for Some Puppetry
You never know just what you might find on location. Producer Mary Brooks and prop stylist Susan discovered these little monkey puppets in the house. Until next time, that's a wrap!
