Writers on Writing: The Truth

We have found that "truth" is a recurring theme among many authors—they use it as a yardstick, a goal post and often it's their richest reward when their book is complete. Here are some authors talking about the importance of authenticity in their work.

Maya Angelou "All I knew is, I had to tell the truth."
— Maya Angelou, The Heart of a Woman

"The world teaches you to get to what the truth is and still I think that's the quest, that's the part that makes it interesting because the older you get as a writer, the more you should understand about what is true and what is not true."
— Pearl Cleage, What Looks Like Crazy on an Ordinary Day

"For me the most important rule in writing is to be honest and that means to be honest to the story that wants to be told."
— Melinda Haynes, Mother of Pearl

Toni Morrison "In the music, where you have to tell the truth where there are words or not, it's all about being there at the marrow. Not over here somewhere faking it, pretending, but at the marrow and that's where I always wanted the journey of the books to go. That's where the excitement is. That's where the compulsion is."
— Toni Morrison, The Bluest Eye

"If you start trying to pretend that you're writing like somebody else...that's where you'll fall down. If you just write as you talk to yourself, then I think that almost everybody does have a story to tell and it will escape if you let it."
— Maeve Binchy, Tara Road

"If you do it legitimately and if you write as honestly as you can and you're true to those characters, the audience will find it."
— Wally Lamb, She's Come Undone, I Know This Much Is True
