Writers on Writing: The Ending

"Sometimes when I'm absorbed in a great book, I slow down because I don't want the book to end," says Oprah. That feeling is almost always compounded when you're the author. Here, some writers tell us how they feel about coming to the end of their own books.

Sheri Reynolds "I wept buckets when I finished the Rapture of Canaan because I had given myself completely and I was in all those characters and then to finish it's really kind of lonely."
— Sheri Reynolds, The Rapture of Canaan

"Oh, thank God, I'm done with this. It was like an instantaneous thing. I had been in their lives and in this horrible situation with these poor people for the months it took me to write the book. And then it was like, bam, I was done. I was out of there. It was this wonderfully liberating feeling. Its like getting out of a really bad, abusive relationship...I'm done. I'm walking away. I don't have to think about them anymore."
— Tawni O'Dell, Back Roads

Ursula Hegi "The characters never end when the book ends. After they've become so very real for you, they don't just stop when you mail the manuscript to your publisher. They live in your house for a while."
— Ursula Hegi, Stones From The River

"I remember driving to the post office to send the book off for the very last time. I was never going to be able to put another comma in. I was done. That was it. And I remember crying on the way home, and saying, "I love you, Ruth, and I hope you have kind treatment and I hope people love you as much as I do."
— Jane Hamilton, The Book of Ruth, A Map of the World
