What Is Quality?

Paloma Picasso's meaningful jewelry

While one person sees quality in an object, another sees it in a place. Some register quality through emotions. Others through aesthetics. And still others through experience. People tumble upon it, cultivate it, purchase it and live in it.

Wherever it's seen, felt, or found, the one consistent attribute of real quality is its endurance. It always holds or increases in value over time. Maybe that's because when we recognize quality, we connect to a larger truth, either about ourselves or about human nature. A comfortable couch is really about relationships. A photograph of children provokes the imagination. A dose of morning sunlight restores the soul. Like love, quality can and should be everlasting—and its real value lies in the heart of the beholder.

From Paloma Picasso to Giorgio Armani, see how the tastemakers define quality.
